Coast Of Labrador

The most potent form of corruption is apathy-knowing something is wrong and choosing not to do anything. The Innu of the Davis Inlet have been lied to by our government and many lives have perished. As a Canadian I feel ashamed and angry. I needed to write this song.

I just got the news from the coast of Labrador
It blew in from the street through the locks on my front door
Inside a shed a child dropped to the floor
He died inhaling fumes on the coast of Labrador

His family and his friends were torn from their home
By contracts and lies issued from a throne
First came the men, then the sound of fighter jets
And the Innu they were pushed to a cold, cold inlet

Chorus
Where were you, where were you when the first bell did toll?
I was in the tower, I was praying for my soul
Where were you, where were you when the first cry did sound?
I was in my chambers, I was polishing the crown
I had to draw a line, I had to close my door
Now the chill is blasting in from the coast of Labrador

Up on Parliament Hill no money could be found
And no printing press would turn until a body was underground
Like hollow men they stand, they’ve got blood on every hand
Heads stuffed with straw and their hearts stuffed with sand

Chorus

An Eagle takes the wing and he flies into the sun
He carries in his throat the suffering of one
Who lies beyond a prayer and he lies beyond the crown
He lies with his future in the cold, cold ground

Where were you, where were you when the first cry did sound?
I was in my chambers, I was writing this song down
